Herbie Hancock is, indisputably, one of the most outstanding figures in the history of jazz. And not only as a pianist and keyboardist, but also as a creative mind. His influential career has given rise to unique moments such as the classic Cantaloupe Island—sampled in the 1990s by Us3 and turned into a best seller—and Watermelon Man.
The great Miles Davis noticed him in the early 1960's and he was part of his band for five years. He then flew solo and his electric piano helped define the jazz-funk sound of the 1970's fronting the legendary Headhunters. His own vision of the avant-garde and futurism also led him to electronic experimentation and soundtracks—he signed the respective soundtracks of the iconic Blow-Up (1966), Death Wish (1974) and Round Midnight (1986)—aspects that help to understand the relevance of this essential artist.
