Billy's Violence, Victor Afung Lauwers (Belgium, 2023)
When creating Billy's Violence, Victor Afung Lauwers researched the ten tragedies of Shakespeare and rewrote them into violently loving, intimate dialogues in which the woman is the central focus, stripped of any historical reference or anecdotal content.
Is Shakespeare a kind of late-16th and early-17th-century Tarantino? The answer from the members of Needcompany, a multidisciplinary, multicultural and innovative theatre company created in 1986, as well as from Jan Lauwers’ and Needcompany’s local accomplices: Nao Albet, who is always ready to explore the paths laid down by the Belgian director; Gonzalo Cunill, an actor born in Argentina with a long career on Catalan stages and in film; and the actor and director Juan Navarro.
The film will be screened in original English, Spanish and Dutch and subtitled in Catalan.
A performance in the 2024 edition of Grec Festival de Barcelona.
