Andy Clark, a leading voice in cognitive philosophy and professor at the Sackler Centre for Consciousness Science at the University of Sussex, talks about the limits of the brain and the extended mind thesis.
Without our brains we are nothing. But human intelligence is more than the action of the brain and the central nervous system. Philosopher Andy Clark, whose theory has become a crucial link between neuroscience and philosophy, argues that the human mind constitutes an "extended mind": an organ of thought and reason whose boundaries go beyond the skin and skull. This is important to understand the hybrid nature of the human mind, constructed of biological and non-biological elements. As we enter an era of generalized human bioenhancement, it is important to ask a question: where dies the mind end and the rest of the world begin?
