Joya
The midst of an economic crisis is an odd time to launch a contemporary jewellery fair, but that’s what the brave souls behind this shiny new event have decided to do. There is something mesmerising about the sparkle of gold and silver, the flash of diamonds, rubies and sapphires; they can cause a hypnotic and child-like fascination, even if, for many of us, the chance of ever owning a major piece of bling is as good as the chance of winning the lottery money we’ll need to buy it. Still, a trip to JOYA will help (temporarily) relieve some of that emerald envy or amethyst angst. Exhibitions of work by up-and-coming and well-established jewellers, organised tours to jewellery shops around the city and a specially-designed bracelet as the entry ‘ticket’, whose proceeds will go to charity, mean that there are plenty of ways to enjoy this contemporary finery without ending up too out-of-pocket.
