A Jewel of Catalan Civil Baroque
What makes this palace, located on La Rambla next to Carrer del Carme, so unique is its architectural style, quite unusual in Barcelona. The palace was commissioned in the late 18th century by the then Viceroy of Peru, the Marquis of Castellbell, and was later inhabited by his widowed wife, from whom it takes its name. The Viceroy's Barcelona residence, a blend of Baroque and Rococo styles, was declared a National Monument by the Spanish State in 1941. It's worth taking some time to admire the building, starting with the façade, decorated with balconies and pilasters and crowned by an imposing balustrade with twelve vases. From the shady inner courtyard, two majestic staircases rise on either side, ascending to the palace's main floor, where temporary exhibitions are held.
