Museu del Disseny de Barcelona is the city’s art and design museum, established in 2008 as part of Barcelona's Institute of Culture. The building was designed by the MBM team of architects to channel the museum's key purpose of conserving and exhibiting collections that show the city's heritage. It offers an exhibition area, centre for research, and programme of educational activities.
There are four permanent exhibitions, displaying collections related to product design, fashion design, graphic design, decorative arts, textile and clothing, and graphic arts. There are also various temporary exhibitions and activities that seek to stimulate critical reflection on the contribution of design to the 21st century. The museum conserves heritage with over 70,000 objects, which range in date from the fourth century AD to the present, where visitors can see a diverse display of pieces such as medieval fabrics or enamelled glass and ceramic made in Alcora in the 16th century. The Documentation Centre stores information on the objects, comprising over 22,000 documents such as archives, books, photographs, databases and more.
