Philharmonia Orchestra, one of the most outstanding London groups, presents its chief conductor, the young and talented Santtu-Matias Rouvali, along with a passionate program.
Tchaikovsky captured in the Romeo and Juliet Overture the sentimental whirlwind that is the failure of a love story. For its part, youthful temperament and freshness define Rachmaninoff's First Piano Concerto. The composer wrote it at just 18 years old when he was still a student at the Moscow Conservatory, although he revised it 26 years later. Yuja Wang has performed it all over the world, receiving rave reviews for its ability to create reverie states in the most lyrical passages of the work and lend brilliance and energy to the most rhythmic ones. Tchaikovsky revealed in a letter to his protector Nadezhda von Meck that the introduction to his Fourth Symphony is the core of it and represents Fate. The music that follows was inspired by the struggle between dreams and reality that we all face.
