Vivienne Westwood: Do It Yourself, Letmiya Sztalryd (2011, France)
A year in the life of one of the most iconic, irreverent and committed women in English fashion.
Can anger be a prime creative engine? Of course. Vivienne Westwood never stopped reinventing herself, from her arrival in the fashion circus in 1970 she was driven by her hatred of the conventional and commercial. This documentary followed the queen of punk, heiress to the imaginary agitator of the French Revolution, for a year. Westwood evolved her brand ethos from a provocative starting point to an industry-first no-nonsense, environmentalist narrative. For her, culture and art protect from the virus of disenchantment. “The first impression of fashion is that it can be very superficial, but then you go deeper and feel that it provides you with an anchor for life. You can work in this trade in a somewhat monotonous way, I did it myself for fifteen years. Still I enjoyed it. Today I enjoy it even more, and I love being able to shape other possible worlds."
Film screened in original version with Spanish subtitles.
