Verdi displayed his ingenuity with this politically-charged opera, avoiding the censorship of the time by using a love story as a pretext. Based on real events, the piece narrates the betrayal and assassination of King Gustavo III of Sweden.

Initially commissioned for the Naples Opera, it was finally premiered at the Rome Opera, but only after difficulty and delays. The CaixaForum offers a projection of a wonderful version produced by the Spanish Teatro Real, featuring the voices of tenor Marcelo Álvarez, soprano Violeta Urmana and musical direction by Jesús López Cobos.
