The Watermelon Woman, Cheryl Dunye (1996, US)
A landmark of queer, black and rebellious cinema, The Watermelon Woman is a romantic comedy filled with careful stylistic experimentation.
The search for black actresses in the cinema of the 1930s is the trigger for this film, in which the filmmaker interprets herself through a story that raises questions of representation linked to race, sex and gender. It features Cheryl Dunye, Guinevere Turner, Valarie Walker, Lisa Marie Bronson and Cheryl Clarke.
Catch a screening at the Filmoteca de Catalunya, including a post-screening debate. The film will be screened in English with Catalan subtitles.
