In three sessions, organized by the Ministry of Universities in collaboration with the CCCB, various voices from esteemed European universities come together to reflect on animal rights and our obligations toward the other species on Earth.
Over the past decades, many voices have emphasized our interdependence with the other species that inhabit the planet, as well as the need to recognize them as subjects protected by law. This is a radical transformation which, given the acceleration of phenomena such as the loss of biodiversity, cannot be postponed and in which universities and their research play a key role.
The first session will be "From philosophy to law: a new framework for animal rights." In this session, Marta Tafalla, Montserrat Escartín, Pablo Serra-Palao and Susana Monsó talk about the paths philosophy has taken to activate the possibility of recognizing other species as subjects of law.
The second will focus on "Alternatives to animal experimentation," in which Lluís Montoliu, Núria Querol, Guillermo Repetto Kuhn and María Pilar Vinardell Martínez-Hidalgo talk about the ethical implications of animal experimentation and the possibility of developing alternative methods.
Finally, the last session will focus on "The voices of Europe on interspecies ethics."In this session, led by Alice Di Concetto, Manuel Castells, Núria Almirón and Pim Martens, they discuss different projects developed in Europe aimed at promoting a new legal and political framework for animal rights.
The activities can be viewed live online and will have a simultaneous translation from English to Spanish. The Future of Animal Rights conversations forms part of the Sustainable Development Goals.
