In the 19th century, portraiture was a booming genre, especially due to the growth of the bourgeois classes. At the same time, the approximation of the arts to realism led to the depiction of effigies with increasing naturalism. However, some conventions can be seen that, even in photography, denote the use of procedures and codes that this exhibition allows us to identify and interpret.

It is the first exhibition to be organized in Spain devoted exclusively to portraiture in the 19th century in all its manifestations and techniques: painting, sculpture, medals, miniatures, watercolor, drawing, etching, lithography and photography. This is possible thanks to the richness and variety of the collections of the Museo Nacional del Prado.
