One of Stravinsky's best known ballets and his first big success was the outcome of a collaboration with Sergei Diaghilev. Juan Eduardo Cirlot described the work L'Oiseau de Feu ("The Firebird") as having an underlying "fiendish energy."
A prime example of his primitivist stage, L'Oiseau de Feu is based on a popular Russian legend that explores the battle between good and evil, and is a work that the composer returned to time and time again. Its music is steeped in irony, and it reveals Stravinsky's talent for using just a few elements to build a whole universe.
The concert program also includes works by Sergei Rachmaninoff, Paul Hindemith, Hans Abrahamsen, and more.
