Stereolab was not necessarily the first metalinguistic group, but it has become the paradigm of an encyclopedic band, steeped in musical erudition.
In the three decades since the release of debut album, Peng!, the group has gone from commenting on the 20th century sonic legacy to writing its own history, compiled in the Switched On series.
The songs of Tim Gane, Laetitia Sadier and company seem like comments on a critical edition of psychedelia, kraut rock and lounge. It is enough to listen to them with a little attention to realize that, deep down, they are talking about the issues—light or transcendent—that surround the human being. Just like all the great pop artists of yesterday, today and tomorrow.
