Sergio Mendes, history and living legend of Brazilian music, makes his debut at Voll-Damm Jazz Festival. From his beginnings as a samba-jazz pianist at the Beco das Garrafas in Rio, to his wild success in the United States (where, legend has it, he is by far the Brazilian artist who has sold the most records), Mendes has shaped the universal music lover for decades. With an impressive resume that includes collaborations with greats like Antônio Carlos Jobim and jazz legends like Cannonball Adderley, Mendes has worked in recent years with artists like the Black Eyed Peas, Common and John Legend. As the documentary dedicated to him, In the Key of Joy, says, it is clear that Mendes' first objective in this life has been to bring joy through his music. "It responds to a mathematical formula", says Carlinhos Brown in the film, "Sergio Mendes is equivalent to musical intelligence."
