In the history of music, there are works that – with their creation – defined a before and after in musical genesis. This is the case of Steve Reich’s 'Music for 18 Musicians,' one of the 20th century’s paramount works of the genre known as Minimalism.
This work was composed in the explosive New York of the 1970s where this kind of music coexisted with the Pop Art of Andy Warhol and his famous Interview magazine; the American fashion proposed by Halston mixed with the acerbic reflections of Susan Sontag; where Jonas Mekas and experimental cinema visually shook a world about to explode with the emergence of the punk movement.
In this context of tensions and extremes, Steve Reich created Music for 18 Musicians, a work influenced by both Indonesian gamelan and the creations of medieval composer Perotin.
