Nativity scenes are a celebration of life at Christmastime. Each year, the Barcelona nativity in Plaça Sant Jaume is created by a different artist, and pays homage to local holiday and cultural traditions.
They spend over three hundred days and nights sleeping in attics, wardrobes and boxes in the basement. Then one fine day in December, amid lots of fuss and expectation, we suddenly wake them up and put them in the living room.
The Christmas star, decorations, the nativity and the tío Christmas log, colored lights, baubles, the Three Kings, shepherds, Mary and the baby Jesus, Joseph, the caganer and goodness knows who else! Every family has its own characters with their own hiding places, and this year they will all be in Plaça de Sant Jaume. The giant nativity scene in Plaça Sant Jaume has become one of Barcelona’s most cherished Christmas traditions, enchanting locals and tourists alike with its imaginative themes and figures.
