Paul Strand was an American photographer and filmmaker who helped establish photography as an art form in the twentieth century. His diverse body of work over six decades explores endless visual genres, as well as subjects from Europe to Africa to the Americas.
At this exhibition at the Filmoteca, visitors will find an exclusive session displaying some of Strand's cinematographic works. The session exhibits three distinct titles: Manhatta (1921), Redes (1934), and Heart of Spain (1937). Manhatta explores the working parts of New York City, and he essence of the Big Apple. Meanwhile, Redes sees Strand's arrival in Mexico and his point of view on the labor exploitation of fishermen. The final session, Heart of Spain, was edited by Strand himself and is a documentary about the activities of the famous Canadian surgeon Norman Bethune.
