Patrick Radden Keefe, Fragile Truths
Orwell Day 2024
to
Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB) Carrer de Montalegre 5, 08001 Barcelona
In this opening lecture of the “Fragile Truths” cycle, Patrick Radden Keefe will speak about how disinformation threatens democratic quality, the challenges faced by investigative journalism, and the importance of writing about the wealthy and powerful.
Patrick Radden Keefe is one of today’s references in investigative journalism. His work is based on painstaking research over lengthy periods so that he can give a detailed account of the people behind each of his stories.
His wide-ranging research into the connection of the Sackler family with the epidemic-scale use in the United States of the synthetic opioid fentanyl is an example of how investigative journalism can reveal the exercise of power as it works among the different spheres of society.
Invoking the legacy of Orwell and drawing on his experiences exposing the billionaire pharmaceutical family and writing about the troubles, Patrick Radden Keefe makes an impassioned plea for the importance of robust investigative journalism for safeguarding democracy.
The event will be take place in English with simultaneous translation into Catalan.
