The Barcelona Symphonic Band (BMB) opens the season under the baton of its principal conductor José R. Pascual-Vilaplana, with the Barcelona Clarinet Players (also members of the Band), and living jazz legend Paquito D’Rivera.
The program includes music inspired by a fascination for Latin sounds and rhythms by two American composers: Cuban Overture by George Gershwin, and Daniel Freiberg’s Latin American Chronicles Jazz Clarinet Concerto, featuring the Cuban musician himself.
D’Rivera will also perform two of his own works. El elefante y el payaso (The Elephant and the Clown) tells an entertaining story from the time when the musician worked in a circus in Cuba: one of the big attractions was the famous clown Fofó, who one day hid an elephant from its trainer and later went with him to the police to report it missing. The performance of his Caribbean Berceuse (Caribbean Lullaby) will feature the Barcelona Clarinet Players as the clarinet quartet.
