Lionel Rogosin, a pioneer of New American Cinema, offers a humanist portrait of the "real” America, which is not something we’d usually see in commercial film productions of the era.
He combines the device of documentary cinema with fiction, following the lives of two of the inhabitants of The Bowery, the vagabond neighborhood in New York, over a period of three days. The film was produced in the USA in 1956, and was banned from theaters when it was first released.
