In this 1968 horror film directed by George A. Romero, Zombie corpses rise from the dead and attack the living as survivors take refuge in an abandoned house and attempt to fight them off. The pragmatic Ben (Duane Jones) does his best to control the situation, but when the reanimated bodies surround the house, the other survivors begin to panic. As any semblance of order within the group begins to dissipate, the zombies start to find ways inside, and one by one, the living humans become the prey of the deceased ones.
Romero terrorizes the screens with a zombie apocalypse like never before, laying the foundations for an archetype that would take root strongly in popular culture from the 1960s. Later analyses have read in it a clear resonance of the social and cultural changes of the long decade of the 1960s.
