One of the season’s unmissable moments is the New Year Concert, which sees former principal conductor Salvador Brotons at the helm of the Band once more.
In part one, the program heralds celebration with the energetic Jubilus! by Jan van der Roost, written as an overture, and Gaïa by Anthony Girard, a work dedicated to the ancient Greek god of fertility. The work presents dramatic contrasts, from ritual recollection to a triumphal march. It closes with the suite from the ballet Gayaneh by Aram Khachaturian. The Georgian composer with Armenian roots sets to music a story of the family conflict faced by a young woman because of her husband’s misconduct, a narrative with a patriotic undercurrent.
Part two features the unmistakable Viennese melodies and rhythms of Franz von Suppé, with the overture Morning, Noon and Night in Vienna, and Johann Strauss II, with Hunting Polka and the Voices of Spring and Emperor waltzes.
