Palau de la Música Catalana Carrer Palau de la Música 4-6, 08003 Barcelona
Mozart's Requiem endures as one of the most important and imposing works in the history of music; all its musical mystery and divinity make it something inexhaustible and able to move us in all its splendor.
It is curious that this piece has become so well-known considering that Mozart left it unfinished. Many myths surround this work: it has been said that an unknown composer carried out the commission; that a dying Mozart worked tirelessly on the composition until the very last moment; and that a Salieri at the dying composer's bedside transferring his ideas to the score. The image that Miloš Forman's film Amadeus portrays is far from reality.
The year 1791, in spite being the last of Mozart's life, was a very productive year, and Requiem was not his only obsession. Other well-known works by the author came to light that same year: the Concerto for clarinet and orchestra and the opera The Magic Flute are some of the projects that had kept him busy in the months before his death.
The concert also includes two complementary works: Mozart’s Symphony No. 1 in E-flat major, KV 16, a youthful piece full of energy and freshness that marks the beginning of his journey as a composer, and Morten Lauridsen’s Soneto de la Noche, a piece based on a poem by Pablo Neruda that evokes introspection and the serenity of the night.
