Marian Barahona’s first solo album Big Little Dream is a project that began with two essential premises.
On one hand, there is Barahona’s devotion to two fundamental leading figures in jazz: Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. This devotion is translated into an implicit dialogue between the two influences, as if two opposing energies could end up finding their own space in an encounter between yin and yang, day and night, or the two sides of the moon. On the other hand, Big Little Dream is an intimate project, created to adapt iconic pieces from the big band repertoire for a small line-up; for example, Count Basie’s “Flight of the Foo Birds”.
From these two seemingly opposite starting points, Barahona has woven a repertoire of beautiful stories, accompanied by her trio of players. The subtle arrangements full of evocative dynamics, highlight nuances and suggestions of instruments that are not really there – all to ensure that the audience receives every drop of emotion from each piece.
Performers:
- Marian Barahona, vocals
- Kike Angulo, guitar
