For Thom Andersen, Los Angeles is probably the most photographed city in the world, but it is one of the least photogenic.
In this documentary, the critic and filmmaker analyzes the way this great city has been shown on screen, whether it has been the primary focus of the story or not. At the same time, it shows how the real city and its people as well as its history have been distorted and misrepresented through the prism of popular cinema.
Assuming that fiction has great documentary potential, Andersen tries to convince his audience that they can see cinema — and particularly cinema shot in LA — from another point of view. The result is a provocative analysis of our ability to watch movies.
