La Trace, a work commissioned by L’Auditori and the CNDM for four clarinets, was first performed in February 2020 at the Museo Reina Sofía. It is based on the perception of the imprint of time on human life.
José Manuel López-López and filmmaker and audiovisual artist Pascal Auger — a former associate of French philosopher Gilles Deleuze — explore together the traces of the passage of time, not as a chronological succession of events, but as something living, manifested in the here and now. The clash between combinations of image and sound from the clarinets together with live electronics unleashes a world of polyphonic layers, each with its own temporal character.
As the López-López himself explains: “Time passes as if in an immense hourglass, in a gigantic polyphony that embraces cosmic, geological and quantum time."
