If the correfoc is too much for you and you want to enjoy the festivities without getting so close to the fire, consider heading to the beach for a world-class fireworks show. For two nights Barcelona skies will be set alight with sensational fireworks displays.
Barceloneta beach is the perfect spot to enjoy the dazzling spectacle that lights up the night sky each year in a thousand colors. This is the Pyrotechnics Showcase, and on Tuesday evening, it will feature one of Tenerife’s leading fireworks companies: Hermanos Toste from Los Realejos. They are one of the longest-standing family-run pyrotechnics firms in the Canary Islands, with a brilliant legacy. Founded in 1788, they not only master the secrets of gunpowder but have also, over generations, introduced countless innovations to their craft, regularly showcased at major festivals and events across the islands and mainland Spain.
On Wednesday night, a new and more artistic fireworks display will light the skies with a show put together by a family-owned company founded by Dr Martín Jordà Munar on Mallorca in 1940. Three generations of the same family have worked to become some of the most famous fireworks artists on the Balearic Islands and beyond. They innovate, as you’ll see, but their shows, which have been seen in fireworks festivals all over Spain and Europe, bear their own unique hallmark: they begin with three ascending palm trees.
We recommend you grab a blanket and sit back to view a show that will take your breath away.
What to Do for La Mercè
Celebrated in the days surrounding September 24th, the La Mercè festival program is packed with things to do and see. From parades and exhibits filled with gegants (giants), capgrossos (bigheads) and fire-breathing beasts to giant castells (human towers), traditional dances, correfocs (fire runs), drone light shows, fireworks displays and free concerts, you're sure to find something to delight and amaze you.
But if all the festivities of La Mercè get to be a bit too much, why not take a culture break? Many of the city’s museums observe the holiday with a jornada de portes obertes (open doors). To make the most of your time, take a look at our interactive map with all the locations that are throwing open their doors for free: Map of Barcelona Museums with Free Entry for La Mercè.
See our Guide to La Mercè for a list of the festival's events and discover the story behind one of the biggest celebrations on Barcelona's calendar and the many traditions that make this beloved Catalan holiday so special.
