La Diada, Catalunya's National Day, on September 11th is celebrated with a public holiday, and various events and celebrations throughout the day, beginning with the traditional laying of wreaths by dignitaries, including the Mayor of Barcelona, at the monument to Rafael Casanova.
But the central event of la Diada is the demonstration for Catalan independence. For their annual demonstration, this year, L'Assemblea Nacional Catalana (ANC) and Òmnium Cultural have organized four large columns that will leave from various points in the city, coming together at Plaça d'Espanya.
The demonstration takes place in the afternoon, beginning at the legendary time of 17:14.
- The freedom column claims civil rights and liberties, it will leave from the Ciutat de la Justícia following along Gran Via to Plaça d'Espanya.
- The language column defends the preservation of the Catalan language and Catalan culture. It starts at Escola Proa, at Carrer de Gavà and Passage de Solsona, will go to Carrer del Moianès, up to Carretera de Sants, then turn right to Plaça d'Espanya.
- The country column is a protest to the lack of infrastructure funding and demands a better quality of life. It begins at estació de Sants and goes straight down Carrer de Tarragona to Plaça d'Espanya.
- The sovereignty column demands economic independence. It begins at l’Agència Tributària (tax agency) at Plaça de Letamendi in the direction of Carrer d’Aribau then left to Gran Via until Plaça d'Espanya.
Once the demonstration is over, there is a huge, free concert at 19:00 at Arc de Triomf featuring Triquell, Jazz Woman and Figa Flawas.
Keep in mind that the celebrations will interrupt traffic flow as well as mass transport options, so check the city's website for details before you head out.
