to
Barcelona City Centre 08001 Barcelona
La Diada, Catalunya's National Day, on September 11th is celebrated with a public holiday, and various events and celebrations throughout the day, beginning with the traditional laying of wreaths by dignitaries, including the Mayor of Barcelona, at the monument to Rafael Casanova at 9:00.
But the central event of la Diada is the demonstration for Catalan independence organized by l’Assemblea Nacional Catalana (ANC), Òmnium Cultural, the AMI, the Consell de la República, the Intersindical and CIEMEN. This year's theme is "Fem més curt el camí. Independència."
The demonstration takes place in the afternoon, beginning at 16:00 and peaking at the legendary time of 17:14. The march will depart from the Estació de França, going along the Passeig de Picasso, Passeig de Pujades and Passeig de Lluís Companys, until the Arc de Triomf.
Free Concert
Once the demonstration is over, there is a huge, free concert at 18:30 at Arc de Triomf featuring Al·lèrgiques al pol·len, Ginestà and Flashy Ice Cream.
Keep in mind that the celebrations will interrupt traffic flow as well as mass transport options.
Open House (Portes Obertes)
If crowds aren't your thing, you can visit some of Barcelona’s museums for free and take advantage of the opportunity to enter the Palau de la Generalitat in the Plaça Sant Jaume and the Catalan Parliament, located in the Parc de la Ciutadella. Museums commemorating the day with an open house include the Museu d’Història de Catalunya, Museu d’Arqueologia, Born Centre de Cultura i Memòria, Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (MNAC), El Palau Güell and Palau Robert, to name a few.
