The main linchpins of this program are two of Mozart's most famous symphonies: the dramatic, tempestuous, syncopated Symphony No. 25 and the forceful, tragically majestic Symphony No. 38; a work premiered in Prague during the same period as Don Giovanni, given the triumphal success of performances of The Marriage of Figaro in the city.
Between both symphonies, the audience will hear two works featuring dynamic cellist Kian Soltani (one of the best-known instrument players of the new generation): Cello Concerto No. 3 in C major by Haydn, with its gallant, restrained first two movements. The audience will also hear the surprising electrifying finale, and Lieux retrouvés by the highly original, eclectic British composer Thomas Adès. This is a suite of musical passages featuring restful, rippling melodies in "Les eaux," a scherzando rhythm in "La montagne," a contemplative pastoral air in "Les champs" and a dance macabre in "La ville" which serves as a brilliant finale.
