For twenty years the Tuareg culture and music has fascinated the world. Their quasi-sacred poetic songs have inspired western songwriters such as Kurt Vile or José Gonzalez, while the virtuosity of their guitar playing fascinates guitar heroes like Jimmy Page. Finally the spirituality and meditative hypnotism impresses electronic music producers like Four Tet.
With two albums under their belt, the band Imarhan has become an emblem of the new Tuareg generation, breathing new life into Assouf, the style of music known as the desert blues. This group, led by Sadam, reflects the culture of their city, the capital of the Tuareg people, which stands at the threshold of the desert. By building their own studio in Tamanrasset, Imarhan have become the spokesmen of the young lost generation of Tuaregs, largely forgotten by the Algerian, Nigerian and Malian governments.
See them perform live at Barcelona’s Apolo [2].
