'Beauties & Beasts: Handel's Italian Visit' is celebrated with a dramatic cantata by Vespres d'Arnadí ensemble. 'Aci, Galatea e Polifemo,' tells a mythological love story through powerful solos, showcasing Handel's talent for Baroque opera.
The concert commemorates George Frideric Handel’s first visit to Italy, where he perfected his skills as an opera composer. The Vespres d’Arnadí ensemble introduces us to a dramatic cantata (or ‘serenata’) written in 1708 by the German composer for the Duchess of Laurenzana, on the occasion of her niece’s wedding. The plot, which is mythological in inspiration, centres on the cyclops Polyphemus, and Galatea, a sea nymph who is in love with the shepherd Acis.
It includes arias which reflect the style of serious Italian Baroque opera, paving the way for Handel’s success in the theatres of London.
