Now a classic of the 21st century, the re-imagination of Giselle by choreographer Akram Khan, performed by the English National Ballet, takes us to the heart of a community of immigrant workers. Khan is one of the most celebrated and respected dance artists of today. In just over 19 years he has created a body of work that has contributed significantly to the arts both in the United Kingdom and abroad.
As in the romantic ballet premiered in 1841, two people from different social classes fall in love. In Khan's story, she is an immigrant worker and he is a man from the ruling rich class, and from this emerges a story of love and betrayal. Khan's choreography blends the Indian Kathak dance with classical dance with great beauty. Tamara Rojo, the company's director and principal dancer, plays the title role and James Streeter plays Albrecht. The ballet is captivating due to Khan's choreography, the spectacular scenery designed by Tim Yip and the suggestive music of Vincenzo Lamagna, inspired by the original by Adolphe Adam.
