Inspired by the homongous work of Lope de Vega, this work by Antonio Gades is one of the greatest ballets of the 20th century. Fuenteovejuna took two years to be perfected, during this time it's creator researched, reflected and exchanged ideas with his collaborators. It finally premiered in 1994 at the Geneva Opera House.
In 2011 the piece returned to the stage by the hand of Elvira Andrés, former dancer as well as a collaborator of the maestro Gades. The grandeur and beauty of ballet is seen in her masterful choreographic combination of folk dances, stylized dance and flamenco.
Written in the considered Golden Age of Spanish literature, the play by Lope de Vega narrates the revolt of a town against the abuses of its leader, Fernán Gómez, and their quest for justice.
