Living up to its reputation as a haven for students, bohemians and artists, the Gràcia neighborhood doesn't just party for its festa major, it turns into a multi-street wonderland. Committee members spend an entire year planning and designing elaborate decorations for their street based on a selected theme — past themes have included everything from Japan to Alice and Wonderland, and from disco dancing to Jurassic Park — and residents pitch in to help make it a reality. All the decorations are made by hand, mostly from recycled materials, add the effect is truly stunning!

Activities for every age run from morning to late into the night, transforming the sleepy streets into a fantasy land that makes you wonder why anyone would want to be anywhere else.

When it comes to neighborhood festas, Gràcia takes first prize. Dating back to 1827, this festa major has religious roots, although today it is more a vibrant celebration of community and summer. The festival will see a colorful array of concerts, exhibitions, performances and activities for all ages. Live music and DJ sets feature Barcelona-based artists of all styles; bigger names include Tori Sparks, Big Mama Montse and Trèvol. Meanwhile, the mini music festival Festigàbal presents emerging local performers and bands over the course of a fun-filled week.

An independent municipality until 1897, the small-town charm of Gràcia emanates through the neighborhood’s streets, each one competing for the highly coveted prize for the best decorations during the festival. Canopies of multicolored handmade garlands hang from above, creating a labyrinth of tunnels that transport visitors to a different fantasy world at every corner.
