Ermonela Jaho has one of the most sought-after voices among today’s lyrical singers. Born in Albania, she started singing very young. She decided to become an opera singer at the age of 14 after her first trip to Tirana Opera to see a performance of La Traviata.
She pursued her ambition with studies at the National Academy of Saint Cecilia and, in Italy, would go on to win many prestigious singing competitions that opened the way to a successful career. Sought-after by the world’s leading opera houses and acclaimed for her deeply visceral interpretations of roles such as Madame Butterfly, Violetta (La Traviata), Adriana Lecouvreur, Suor Angelica (Il Trittico) and many more, the soprano leaves her indelible mark on everything that she sings. Her vivid interpretations and her exceptional identification with the roles that she performs are noted in all her reviews and are warmly applauded by audiences the world over.
The soprano won over the audience at Peralada in 2017 with Madame Butterfly and in 2018 with Thaïs alongside Placido Domingo and the company of the Teatro Real, Madrid. The beautiful line of her voice, her marvellous interpretation of the music and her colossal stage presence, are now part of the history of the festival. Recently, she won the International Classical Music Awards prize for Best Vocal Music with her solo album Anima Rara, a varied set of recordings mainly in the verismo style with a few pieces of French music in which the listener can appreciate the spirit and emotional realism of each of her arias.
Jaho is coming back to the Festival this year to fill the Church of the Carmen with her voice, in a recital that promises to be truly moving.
