This ballet, inspired by one of the episodes of the classic by Miguel de Cervantes, and set in Barcelona, was created by the French choreographer Marius Petipa and the composer Lugwig Minkus with the Moscow Bolshoi Ballet in 1969. On this occasion, the choreographer Alexei Ratmansky and the Dutch National Ballet return to Petipa's original script to explain and choreograph again the story of two young lovers: Kitri and Basilio, into whose lives the famous Hidalgo and his usual companion, Sancho Panza, stumble.
