This version of Verdi's Don Carlo recorded at the Salzburg Festival is perhaps the most powerful current recording of this opera. Directed by the musical director of the Covent Garden in London, Antonio Pappano, it stars Jonas Kaufmann, the fashionable tenor, who performs a close-in duet with soprano Anja Harteros, undisputed diva of the Bayerische Staatsoper München.

Peter Stein's suggestive staging rounds off an unbeatable proposal. The luxury cast is completed by Thomas Hampson as Rodrigo di Posa, the experienced bass Matti Salminen as Filippo II, the mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Semenchuck as Princess Eboli and the bass Eric Halfvarson as Grand Inquisitor.
