The sublime album Brilliant Light that Loose Music released in 2017 brought Danny & The Champions of The World to the Azkena Rock Festival to triumph as the best of that edition. Since then, the band has continued advancing with its latest album a delightful, clear tribute to country, folk, bluegrass, gospel, rhythm and blues and rock.
With fourteen albums released to date, Danny Wilson makes the phrase "he who had, he kept" come true: We saw it in Stay True (2013, Loose Music), where he evoked the Bob Seger—Tom Petty tandem. Here, he was already beginning to exude that flavor of Stax, and in 2015 he released What Kind Of Love (2015, Loose Music) with his usual Champions of The World. The fifth studio album delights listeners by surprising again with a twist to happier songs and throwing a grateful wink at the basic soul that defines the group.
The London sextet gives us a delicious recollection of a handful of well-rounded songs, with more soul than rock, with the rearview mirror on E Street Band and the Rumor of Graham Parker in its most plethoric period. The songs, perfect for many, focused on Danny's fondness for telling lifelong stories, lies, rock bands and, above all, that we live in a dirty, unfair world.
