César Franck is probably Belgium's most famous composer, and his symphonic poem The Cursed Hunter is one of his most fascinating works. Franck's orchestration evokes the dark atmosphere of persecution; at the conclusion of the piece he quotes a passage from Héctor Berlioz's Fantastic Symphony which so inspired him.
And with Ravel’s Bolero we see the composer’s Basque roots. Ravel himself considered the work as a study in orchestration, but the end result was much more than that. The Bolero shows great originality and has become one of the most performed compositions the world over.
The same is true of Joaquin Rodrigo's famous Concierto de Aranjuez, which includes some of the most beautiful and evocative melodies for the guitar and orchestra repertoire.
Hear all three of these pieces at L’Auditori, where Josep Vicent once again directs the Belgian National Orchestra on a tour that presents a colorful program as a musical journey.
