Cinema, science and technology come together in the Docs Hedy Lamarr documentary film series. Digital life and physical life are intertwined, there is no separating the two. The effects that the Internet and technology have on people’s lives are more visible than ever. Under the theme "Water, Housing and Big Tech," cinema, technology and activism come together to tell stories that the system prefers to fall into oblivion. Three nights. Three documentaries. Three fronts of struggle.
Every internet search has a cost we don’t see. Each empty building follows a script that repeats in silence. Every promise of technological future often hides an experiment done at our expense. The sixth edition of the Docs Hedy Lamarr cycle returns to the Obertes del Canòdrom Grades to give voice to the communities that live, denounce and resist the material and political impacts of a digital transition that is sold to us as neutral and inevitable.
This year, three outdoor sessions take us to three very specific scenarios: the dried wetlands of Chile and Mexico to feed the Big Tech data centers; neighbors in a modernist building in the heart of the Eixample of Barcelona that challenged the investment funds that tried to kick them out; and into the bowels of Tesla, where former workers, whistleblowers and victims dismantle the account of the autonomous car that Elon Musk sells as the future.
From the water that deviates to the servers, through the Orsola House and its pulse against the speculative market, to the security camera images that we should never have seen from a Tesla, this cycle invites us not to look away. And to ask us the question that goes through the three sessions: what future are we building and who pays the price?
All screenings are free and are preceded by a brief presentation by an expert.
