The Brian Jonestown Massacre, formed in San Francisco, California, in 1990, has been essential to the development of the modern American garage scene, and many musicians from Los Angeles and San Francisco began playing with Anton Newcombe.

The group's influence continues to reach far and wide and can be heard in the current crop of psyche bands on the British scene, such as The Horrors and Toy.
