Brahms's first direct contact with death occurred at the age of 20 when he experienced fellow composer Schumann's suicide attempts first-hand. The final loss of his friend and protector, as well as that of his own mother, directly influenced the genesis of his work, A German Requiem.
Its successful premiere in 1868 was attended by Clara, Schumann's widow, with whom Brahms was also in love. Brahms makes clear in this work his familiarity with pain, which he assumes as inherent in the human condition without rebelling against it.
This performance will be led by Eva Sandoval, musicologist, and reporter for Radio Clásica (RNE).
