Most of the works for the organ instrument date back to the time when J. S. Bach worked at the Weimar court. This time period produced the famous Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, BWV 582 for example, a crowning achievement in organ music.
In this program, French performer Benjamin Alard—immersed in the titanic task of recording the entirety of Bach's work for keyboard—combines the equally famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565 with the collection of Schübler Chorales (named after the original publisher) and the Canonic Variations on Vom Himmel hoch da komm ich her, BWV 769 a Christmas choral work, among others.
