The fascinating journey of discovery into Beethoven's symphonies, under the guidance of Jordi Savall and Le Concert des Nations, continues this season with their interpretation of his Seventh and Eighth Symphonies. The two works are intrinsically quite different: one seems to look forward into the future, while the other casts its eyes back to tradition.
The Seventh Symphony is an apotheosis of rhythm and, like the Third and Fifth Symphonies, it is a fine example of the virtuoso composer's skill at exploiting a melodic motifs or rhythm to the full. The Eighth Symphony is a return to a classic approach, inspired by the spirit of Haydn’s symphonies, which Beethoven drew upon in abundance during his years as a music student.
