Nearly 25 years ago, L’Auditori was inaugurated with Joan Guinjoan’s Fanfàrria (Fanfare). To commemorate this anniversary, conductor Ludovic Morlot has chosen it to open the 2023 season, focusing on the theme “power or revolt.”

We will hear Un cant a Pau Casals (A Song for Pau Casals), a tribute to the master by the recently deceased Jordi Cervelló. The concert also features Ludwig van Beethoven’s Third Symphony, from which he literally tore out his dedication to Napoleon Bonaparte, thus distancing the “Eroica” symphony from an individual who had become a tyrant. So, far from the conventions of his time, it constituted a true musical revolt.

Prokofiev, for his part, left his country, fleeing from conflict and revolution, although nostalgia would draw him back. On his return to Russia, he was taken in by the young cellist Mstislav Rostropovich, for whom he wrote several pieces, including his Symphony-Concertoperformed on this occasion by American cellist Alisa Weilerstein.
