25-N, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
Barcelona City Centre 08001 Barcelona
Under the motto "Stop digital gender violence," the city marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women with a focus on stopping the violence perpetrated against women in the digital sphere. The violation of intimacy in mobile phones, anonymity, the potential to go viral on social media and the proliferation of fake content generated by artificial intelligence are just some of the factors that make cyber harassment a problem of the highest order.
Gender violence in the digital sphere is a growing yet often invisible problem that can be difficult to detect. Digital environments foster anonymity and a lack of consequences, facilitating persistent, escalating attacks and increased vulnerability. But the numbers are clear: 39% of gender-based violence occurs in digital spaces, and in Barcelona, one in four teenage girls has experienced internet abuse, a percentage that rises to 31.8% among young women aged 18-year-old girls.
That’s why Barcelona is marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (25N) by focusing on digital violence, with the aim of collectively reflecting on the need to build safe, violence-free, trust-based digital environments. The project is part of a commitment to strengthening the response to digital gender violence, shedding light on this form of violence, preventing it and promoting the well-being and protection of young women in the digital sphere.
Several of Barcelona's districts join in with the message for 25N through a special program of activities. Check the city website for details on the events near you.
