Luxury hotel in the Torre Agbar
The water company, Agbar, will be moving out of its emblematic headquarters, the Torre Agbar in Pl. de les Glòries. Emin Capital has paid 150 million euros to transform the emblematic building, designed by Japanese architect Isozaki, into a luxury hotel.
Barcelona's own Gallery Weekend
The city will soon have its own Gallery Weekend, an event that has taken place in Berlin, Paris and New York for many years. A celebration of art, activities, performances and talks, the weekend will take place in September, 2015.
Spain is creating jobs again
For the first time since the "crisis" began over six years ago, the Spanish economy is creating jobs. Net employment rose by 192,400 in the second quarter of the year from the same period in 2013, according to the National Statistics Institute (INE).
Innovation centre in Poblenou
An old factory, Ca l'Alier, will be transformed into an innovation centre with €6 million of financing from French multinational Schneider Electric and American networking giant Cisco Systems. The City Council will also use a part of the renovated building for offices for its new Institute of Technology for the Habitat (BIT Habitat). The new research centres are expected to open in the summer of 2016 and to create 160 jobs.
Too many concerts in Barcelona
Reggae festival Trash an Ready, which was scheduled for this weekend, has been cancelled due to low ticket sales. Several promoters have criticised the huge amount of concerts and festivals on offer during a time when many local people have drastically reduced their spending.
