Mas calls for early elections
The leader of the Generalitat, Artur Mas, has called for early elections to take place on September 27th this year. The elections are broadly seen as a way for Catalans to vote for or against independence. The decision about the date had been postponed for two months.
Trias looks for a stronger mandate
The Mayor of Barcelona, Xavier Trias, hopes to have a stronger mandate as a result of the city elections which will take place in May. He admits that a lack of absolute majority has made it difficult to govern the city and that more control will be needed to push on with his long-term plans.
The biggest ship in the world comes to Barcelona
The Allure of the Seas will be setting sail from Barcelona on May 1st. This Royal Caribbean mega cruise ship has seven 'neighbourhoods', a crew of over 2,000 people, and its own 'Central Park' with more than 12,000 plants and trees.
More traffic accidents on Fridays
Fridays are the worst day to go by car or motorbike in Barcelona. In 2014, it was the day of the week that saw most accidents on the city's streets. A total of 1,534 accidents took place on Fridays, compared to just 873 on Saturdays and 664 on Sundays.
2014 - a hot year for the city
2014 was the third hottest year recorded in Barcelona since records began in 1780. The average temperature was 16.3 degrees. The hottest year was 2006 with an average temperature of 18.7 degrees.
New, improved Aerobuses
The buses that run between Pl Catalunya and the airport have been equipped with free wifi and USB ports.
Energy saving in the Eixample
The Generalitat and Grupo Habitat Futura have inaugurated a competition for the most energy-efficient way to rehabilitate old buildings. The chosen block is on Gran Via and comprises 27 buildings. The goal is to achieve energy savings of between 50% and 70%, using renewable energy, better insulation and passive saving systems.
