Louis Stettner (1922-2016) regarded photography as an instrument of social change through which to celebrate life and demonstrate the courage of human beings in facing the blessings and adversities of existence to the full.
His experiences as a photographer during the Second World War and his strong belief in humanity significantly impacted his socially engaged photography. His relationship with the Photo League, in particular with photographers such as Sid Grossman and Weegee, and his passion for literature and philosophy also had a major influence on his work. With his camera he captured everything from the routine of workers and laborers to the mountainous landscapes of the French Alpilles massif and everyday life in the New York subway.
Chronologically arranged, the exhibition shows more than 190 photographs, including some never before published images and part of his almost unknown color work, in order to offer, in short, a complete retrospective of his work and the recognition that his career deserves.
